The holiday season is here and with it comes many occasions to get a little dressed up for parties and events with friends.  I asked Christian Freedom, Fifty is the new Fifty’s fashion guru, to write about what he feels the best looks for the holidays are this year. Pictures of all of the fashions described in this article can be found on Fiftyisthenewfifty’s Pinterest page http://pinterest.com/fiftyisnewfifty/christian-s-holiday-fashion-picks/ Here are his recommendations:

1)    Anything Red.  It’s the color of the season and always looks festive!  Yoghi Yamamoto designed an equestrian-inspired suit with a red jacket and black pants that is just festive enough for a party in the country.  Stella McCartney’s simple red dress can be dressed up or down depending on the accessories and can also be worn pretty much all year.  I am mad for the Givenchy red blazer with a black tie blouse paired with copper silk pants.  Very chic and great with high heels. Missoni has a red sheath dress with a vertical hombre effect that looks great.  If you have a really fancy event to go to, a red sequin dress makes you stand out.  L’Wren Scott designed a beautiful one that is sexy and shows all the right curves.  Very Hollywood chic looking.

2)    Velvet. In pantsuits or dresses this fabric looks rich and is just right for the holiday season!  A rust velvet suit by The Row is great for an office or professional holiday event if you don’t feel like wearing a dress.  You can wear the pieces separately also.  Bottega Veneta has a tri color dress in shades of purple velvet that is lovely.

3)    Leather and Fur! These pieces not only make a statement but also keep you warm! Margiela showed a beautiful Lamb’s fur vest in black.  BNY has a green leather dress with a matching fox fur vest, which looks great. Balstaff rocked a super hot plum leather scuba dress, which is great for a party at a club or late night event.  If your holiday party has more of a downtown/arty vibe, Balenciaga has a leather trimmed skirt and silk blouse combination that looks fun and fresh.

4)    Something with sequins or embellishmentEveryone loves to sparkle!  Mark Jacobs showed an oversized metallic cardigan with a pleated skirt that was interesting.  Lanvin has a dress made of charcoal stretch fabric with a baroque embellishment on it, which is a great way to do this trend.  J Mendel has a dark green gown that has jet beading on it that is great for a black tie event.  Dolce and Gabbana has a long gown made of silver lace tissue fabric that is both dreamy and enchanting.

5)    A dress that can go from work to holiday partyChange up your make-up and accessories to go from day to evening! YSL showed a purple v-neck dress with self belt and grey leopard trench which is a great look.  Alaia has a black and red fit and flare style dress which is very flattering on the body.  You can wear it to work with a blazer over it and then put on some red lipstick and jewelry, leave the blazer behind and go to your office holiday party.

Whether or not these outfits are in or out of your budget you can look at these fashions as inspirations for holiday dressing.  There are great clothes out there in all these categories at different price points that can fit into your budget.  Happy shopping and happy holidays. XO Christian
