Activewear: In theory, this term refers to the garments you wear while you exercise. In practice, it becomes one of two things:

  1. Those old, ratty clothes you dislike enough that sweating through them doesn’t disturb you
  2. Clothes that you bought for fitness but now wear in general social situations because they have stretch

Since the new year inspires fitness resolutions in spades, it may be time to rethink activewear altogether. Brands like Lululemon have popularized yoga-inspired fitness gear for people who are young, lithe and already fit (much like the most discouraging people at the gym). Although it can take some searching to find activewear that supports and inspires us as we age, it exists. People who are naturally athletically inclined may find that wearing those old t-shirts and shapeless sweatpants is just fine, but for the rest of us, activewear needs to be a little bit more intentional so that we actually feel like being active.

As a general rule, fitness gear for mature people is not effective if it can clearly double as pajamas. Activewear should be specifically constructed for active pursuits, because construction matters when it comes maintaining your health and wellness. Beyond the aesthetic appeal of well-constructed fitness gear, it can encourage correct alignment, support anything that needs support, and improve circulation. As we get older, it gets more challenging to avoid injuries and discomfort, so these qualities are essential. Here are three brands worth investigating as you peruse gym and fitness club memberships.

Under Armour

High-tech activewear label Under Armour has made headlines in recent months for its inspiring commercials showing beautiful feats of athleticism. Even if you don’t have the flexibility of Misty Copeland, anyone can benefit from the thoughtful construction of this brand’s garments. The sleek pants, leggings, tops, bras and outerwear are designed for comfort, breathability and durability throughout even the most strenuous fitness.

Wearing supportive activewear made from high-quality fabrics also creates a flattering overall look, which is important. One of the major roadblocks to healthy levels of fitness is feeling over-focused on how you could look, which breeds unproductive discouragement with how you do look. Sharp, stylish and effective workout gear is a far better motivator in those instances than flimsy or shapeless activewear.

Good posture is difficult to maintain, and it’s even more difficult to train yourself into from scratch. It’s ever-more important as we age, however, particularly as computers and digital devices encourage us to hunch. Because simply forcing your back into correct posture isn’t always realistic or accurate, Dr. Tim Brown at IntelliSkin has created activewear products that give you a considerable nudge in the right direction. IntelliSkin was inspired by Kinesiology Taping, which professional athletes use to safely heal from injuries while training and competing.

The company sells streamlined women’s and men’s activewear, in addition to shirts, bodysuits and sports bras made with the PosterCue technology. There are even products geared towards alleviating leg pain and similar issues with your lower half. Although IntelliSkin’s essential garments aren’t exactly cheap, the value is undeniable when you consider the potential benefits in making exercise safer and more comfortable for those with minor injuries or chronic alignment challenges.

Zella

Although activewear has gotten more technologically advanced over the years, functional fitness gear doesn’t necessarily have to be “serious”. Zella’s activewear collections combine functionality and personality with a truly fashion-forward spirit. From beautifully draped sweatshirts to structured activewear tops in bold colors, these garments are perfect for women in middle age and up who want to look elegant while staying active.

Zella’s fitness garments are feminine, flattering and come in a great range of sizes. Depending on your comfort level with Spandex, there are also leggings, fitted pants and capris with subtle shaping properties to smooth out common insecurities. Leggings are usually risky business and have a well-earned reputation for being flimsy, see-through and unflattering, but Zella’s Live In Slim Fit Leggings are quite a bit more substantial than the ones you might find at your local drugstore. Overall, this brand is a good value and is ideal for yoga, low-impact fitness and stretching.
