Activities for Grandparents

It’s one of the most special relationships a child can form–the bond between grandchild and grandparent. Grandparents tend to not notice the second helping of dessert and the messy bedroom, and to think every drawing their grandchild plasters on their refrigerator is the best artwork they’ve ever seen. But when the endless games of UNO become tiresome, and every place for hide-and-seek has already been discovered (and rediscovered), what other activities are there to do? Thankfully, plenty. Below are several suggestions on how to keep the relationship exciting and entertaining for both parties.

Children love to be outdoors. Unfortunately, their energy seems to last a lot longer than the older generation. But a rousing game of Red Light, Green Light or Simon Says allow the children to burn off excess energy, while the grandparents can sit in the shade and still enjoy  togetherness. Have a little more energy? Grab a kickball, or a wiffle ball and bat, and show them the star athlete you were–and maybe still are! If it’s a hot summer day, no child will likely forget an afternoon with a hose or a sprinkler, or even an afternoon trip to the pool.

Maybe indoor activities suit your lifestyle, or the weather, better. There are ample indoor games that will keep children of all ages happy for the majority of a day. I Spy, Hide the Thimble (or any small object), or any game involving a deck of cards, such as Go Fish, can provide hours of entertainment.

Games of course aren’t the only way to spend pass the time. Arts and crafts projects, or a simple baking recipe, like chocolate chip cookies, are a great way to keep little ones occupied. So is allowing the children to dress up in whatever outfit they want–maybe even your sweater or hat–and act out a play. Talent shows are also excellent ideas to allow children of all ages to show off their singing or dancing skills, and a great opportunity for them to hear positive encouragement as well.

Want to get away for a few hours? How about a trip to a local museum? Or a game of miniature golf, or bowling, or even an indoor swimming pool? Local malls are also a great place to spend a couple hours. Perhaps map out a miniature scavenger hunt, or give each child a set amount of money and see how much they can purchase with it.

Of course, grandchildren always love sleep-overs. Make them even more memorable by planning a theme night, catered to the grandchild’s age.  Little ones might enjoy one after their favorite super-hero, complete with a cake they can decorate, an age-appropriate movie, and perhaps even a brand-new sleeping bag.

Older grandchildren can also get in on the fun. Perhaps a classic movie that was popular 50 years ago, along with an elegant dinner that matches the movie, or a slumber party with a few of the grandchild’s close friends.

For the adventurous, day trips, or even overnight excursions, will provide memories that will last a lifetime.  Aside from the obvious places, like Disney World or a local amusement park, spending a few days of uninterrupted time anywhere will likely not be quickly forgotten. Camping, either in a tent or a camper (which can be rented in most cities), allows children to explore during the day and share campfire stories with roasted hot dogs and marshmallows at night. Historic landmarks are always a great choice, as it allows education and quality time together, in one trip.

Cruises are also excellent ideas, and can be tailored to any age. Several cruise lines, including Disney, offer children’s activities during the day, permitting grandparents to have some quiet time and still bond with their grandchildren. All-inclusive resorts, such as Beaches and certain Club Med locations, also offer activities tailor-made for children. Several hotel chains, including Days Inn and Holiday Inn, specifically offer activities with children in mind, with child care options available, including private nannies.

The bottom line is, there is always something that can be done to bridge the generations, from the simple tasks to the once-in-a-lifetime excursions.  Be creative, think outside the box, and enjoy making memories!
