Year of Living Dangerously – week 50

December 20, 2011

I can’t believe it is almost Christmas!   It’s funny what a difference a year makes.  Last year at this time I was packing up my office and looking forward to what I thought would be a couple months of not working.   It turned out to be more than a couple of months but I didn’t know that it would be then.   I was looking forward to the first break from working I had had in many years.

Flash forward and I’m at my new job and the new office manager I hired is starting this week.  Yeah!!  I worked with her at Fedex so I know she’ll do a great job and it is nice to have a familiar face at work.  Other than that it is pretty slow this week with he holiday and all.  I’m going upstate to my parents on Friday and coming back on Tuesday so I have 2 short workweeks which is great.

I did a few fun things last week.  I saw the movie ‘The Descendants’ with George Clooney.  I really liked it.  The ads on TV make it appear like a comedy but, although there are funny scenes in it, the movie is about a serious subject.  I recommend it.  I went to see The Messiah at Lincoln  Center with the NY Philharmonic.  My brother Ed wanted to go so I went with him.  The music was good and I love the Hallelujah Chorus but I have to say, it is a long time to get to it.  I liked it but it was a little too long.  I also saw The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center.  My brother and I go to this every year and it makes it seem like Christmas to me.  Before we went to the ballet, we went to the restaurant Lincoln which is located within the complex of Lincoln Center.  This restaurant is expensive but the food was delicious and the service was great.  I really enjoyed it.  I went to our work holiday party at a place called the 3 Sheets Saloon in the village.  We had it upstairs at The Lido Deck.  It was actually kind of a cute place and they put on a nice party for us.

There were a couple things in the news that caught my eye.  The unemployment rate went down to 8.6%.  WooHoo!  It’s probably because Walmart hired workers for the holiday season, but why question any improvement.  Kim Jong Il, the crazy leader of North Korea died.  On the news all these people were weeping after hearing the news.  I don’t get it; half the country is starving and in a blackout at night and they are crying he is gone?!  I would think they might be glad, but maybe they enjoy hardship.  Kobe Bryant’s wife filed for divorce from him.  According to the gossip shows (which I love) he might have had a Tiger Woods type cheating problem.  What a shock!  I can’t believe a rich athlete who was once accused of raping a woman would behave badly.  It doesn’t look like he had a pre-nup so his wife will get her revenge I’m sure.

Well I hope everyone has a great holiday.  Until next week!
