It’s hard to believe but it’s already September 1st!  The summer certainly went quickly, didn’t it?  I’m not a big fan of the extreme heat and August has been really hot in NYC so I’m happy to see cooler weather start.  I consider August through December the best time of the year and I look forward to it.

September will have some interesting articles in our online magazine.  It’s back to school time for college kids and we have an article about how you can save for college.  There has been a lot of things in the news lately about the outrageous costs of college education and how recent graduates are saddled with huge debt as a result.  Hopefully this article will help parents prepare in advance to help their kids pay for their education.

Did you know World Gratitude Day is in September?  Steve Nubie has written an article for us about that day and the benefits of gratitude.  I think as we get older, we need to look at all the things we can be grateful for: our health (if we have it), our families and the ability to live a pretty long life these days.  We did an article awhile ago about keeping a gratitude journal (http://www.fiftyisthenewfifty.com/the-gratitude-journal/) that was quite popular so I’m hoping Steve’s article will be of interest to our readers also.

Along with lines of spirituality we have a few other topics we are covering in September.  Kitt Walsh has written an article about sweat lodges, the history of them in Native American culture and the value they can bring in connecting to the spiritual world.  She also let’s you know where the best ones near you are.  Since September is also self improvement month, Myra Faye Turner has given us an article about writing your own personal mission statement.  We write these for our resumes and job searches so why not write one for your life?!  It’s an interesting concept.

Other topics for the month include: avoiding the pitfalls of buying a retirement home, rebuilding yourself and how the 6 million dollar man is no longer a fantasy, long term care insurance, and the hidden epidemic of drug addiction in baby boomers.  Last but certainly not least (in my mind) is an article about cheese pizza since September also includes Cheese Pizza Day!  You will find out about the history of cheese pizza and a recipe for it.  I have to say that I love pizza!  I could eat it every day so I’m looking forward to this.

All of these are in addition to our regular columns from Lorraine Duffy Merkl, Jill Matlow and dating advice from Lisa Copeland.

Happy Fall!

Beth
