Warmer weather brings with it a fabulous opportunity to show off your wardrobe. As comforting as it can be to hide behind winter coats, spring and summer are the perfect seasons to embrace feminine lines, luxuriate in soft, breathable fabrics, and find joy in bold colors in prints. Here are six fashion-forward spring and summer pieces to embrace this season.

1. Pleats

Pleats have a bad reputation for being dated and unflattering, but believe it or not, there’s a way to wear them that’s modern, chic and romantically elegant. This season, embrace soft, chiffon pleats as opposed to the stiff, starched variety of yore. In light fabrics, pleats add movement and life to an otherwise simple outfit and exemplify the look of springtime and summer. Just make sure that the waistline of a pleated skirt, skort or pair of wide-leg shorts is defined, and that you wear it with some kind of heel, wedge or pointed-toe flat to elongate the line of your legs.

2. Off-the-shoulder

Though this trend will require you to locate a decent strapless bra, it’s one of the trendiest looks this season. Add comfort to the off-the-shoulder craze by choosing printed tops and dresses with loose, airy fabric. Make the look evening-appropriate with a fitted off-the-shoulder cocktail dress in a substantial, stretchy fabric for the most flattering effect. If you’d rather not go sans-bra, cheat the trend by wearing an off-the-shoulder garment with attached thin-strap sleeves or an attached tank top.

3. Printed ankle pants

Always in style, printed ankle pants are a warm-weather classic that add effortless elegance to your wardrobe. Pair them with a loose-fitting blouse and feminine flats for a comfortable, confident look. Though this cut of pants is almost always on-trend in the springtime, feel free to experiment with this season’s most popular prints.

Dark florals are still all the rage, but color takes the forefront with bold-colored stripes. To avoid the infamous widening stripe effect, make sure the ankle pants are fitted through the hip and thighs, and choose slanted or diagonal stripe patterns. Make this trend even sportier by combining the ankle length and chic print with the popular jogger style, which is essentially a socially acceptable way to wear sweatpants in public.

4. Black-and-White Polka Dots

A classic print, color palette could be wintery, but with silk, chiffon, or light cotton fabric, black-and-white polka dot prints can be perfect to set yourself apart in a sea of pastels. Dresses with this theme present a great opportunity to wear a belt that adds a pop of color. Pale pinks, cobalt blues and canary yellows will make the right kind of statement against the classic, elegant tone of this kind of dress. Chiffon polka-dot dresses look exceptional with a T-strap sandal and colorful statement earrings

This season’s trends teach us that the never-ending cape craze works for dresses too. If you’re at all self-conscious about your upper arms or just want a more exciting shape than the typical sleeve, the draping on these dresses can’t be beat. Capelet dresses have shown up in rich, summery colors like tangerines, corals, and hot pinks. Round them out with darker accessories, and you have the perfect look for summer events and stylish weekend outings.

6. High-Low Tops

The high-low trend is a tricky one to master for women of all ages, because it can be an especially challenging cut for those with a fuller bottom half. With the right slim trouser and elongating shoe, however, this can be one of the most fun and flattering casual looks in the spring/summer season. High-low tops are well-matched with comfortable slim jeans and ankle pants. Choose a high-low top with a high collar, buttons, and crisp fabric to elevate the look while keeping it sunshine-appropriate. White high-low button-downs in particular present a fabulous opportunity for liberal accessorizing.
