What’s Bugging Me

Well it’s that time again.  I have to write a little about a few things I’ve seen that are bugging me.  Bear with me while I vent.

I was watching the news one morning last week and they showed a school that has a security system that they said should be an example to all.  You can’t get into the main school past a set of doors (bulletproof) unless you show ID and they check you out first.  The students periodically have ‘code red’ drills where they sit in a darkened room on the floor huddled together until someone tells them the drill is over.  Watching this I thought back to the drills that took place in elementary schools when I was young.  You used to duck under your desk to protect yourself from the bombs of those awful communists.  Now kids need to protect themselves from lunatics with guns.  One student interviewed explained how he felt so much safer at this school compared to his last one.  Didn’t school used to be the place you went where you always felt safe?  It was for me.  I went to Catholic school so you knew that if anyone tried anything those nuns would take a ruler and whack the crap out of them.  What a sad thing this is for the kids of today.

I just saw a commercial for the new season of ‘Dance Moms.’ It was on during the show Hoarders – Buried Alive, the program I watch to feel better about the way my apartment looks.  Anyway, have you ever seen ‘Dance Moms’? Not to be critical, but does that dance instructor Abby seem like she has done any dancing lately?  All the mothers on the show complain to her about how she treats their kids.  Did any of them ever think of finding a new dance school?  Maybe being berated by your dance teacher so you can be on TV is the new way kids are raised these days.  If so, I’m glad I’ve grown up.  ‘Dance Mom’s’ is on Lifetime – Television for women.  That’s the channel that shows movies where woman are stalked, raped, or have murdered someone because, apparently, those are the only interesting female stories.

Have you noticed that the weather has gotten to be big news on TV lately?  Every time there is even a possibility of snow, they report on it like it will be the blizzard of 96, which shut down NYC.  They act the same way when the temperature goes below 30 degrees.  Excuse me but, isn’t this winter?  I say that because winter used to mean temperatures way below 30, lots of snow and people never thought a thing about it.  Last week one of the people from the TODAY show weather team followed a bad winter storm across the United States reporting on the awful conditions at each stop.  Wouldn’t you just want to have her job?  While we are on this topic, what is with closing schools when just a flurry of snow is in the air?  When I was a kid in upstate New York, it seemed like we had to have at least 3 feet of snow on the ground before they even considered closing schools.  I won’t say I walked to school in 6 feet of snow (that was my parent’s story) but it was pretty close to that.

I just read about a new TV show they are producing called ‘Sex Sent Me to the ER.’  This classy production is on TLC – the Learning Channel.  The Learning Channel?  Really?  I haven’t seen it yet but I’m sure it is going to bug me.  Something to look forward to in the New Year!

Happy Holidays!
