Year of Living Dangerously – week 5

I’m a little late with my post this week because I am living in renovation hell.  I told you about my hot contractor in a previous post.  Well let me just say, he is becoming much less good looking as this process goes along.  I admit that I was a bit naive since I’ve never had anything remodeled in my apartment before.  A week ago on Monday, I went to a place where they sell bathroom fixtures/furniture and picked out everything I thought I needed for my bathroom.  It was great; I felt like I accomplished everything I needed to do.  Since they were starting demolition on Weds, I figured I was ahead of the game.  I have found out, however, that shopping for house items is not the same as shopping for shoes at Bergdorfs.  When you shop there, you pick out what you want and they ship them out to you immediately.  As I have found out the hard way, when you pick out bathroom fixtures, they ship them to you when they come in….4 to 6 weeks later.  Of course I didn’t ask when everything would be delivered when I ordered it.  Once I found out, I had a bit of a meltdown.  This is because my bathroom is completely demolished and everything is out of it, save for the toilet (thank god).  The workers moved all my furniture into one side of my studio apartment and put up plastic sheet walls to keep dust out.  This did not work; dust is everywhere and on everything…and I sleep in the midst of all of it.  Luckily my brother lives in the next building so I can go there, take a shower and use it as my base of operations during the day.  The problem with all the things I ordered not coming in quickly is that the plumber and all the other workman my contractor uses are ready to go.  I have had to cancel some of what I ordered and go to home depot (a place I hate) and just get whatever they have in stock so they can do the work.  I’m at the point that I don’t really care what it looks like; if it is there, I’m buying it.  Hopefully by the time I get a job, they will have finished my bathroom enough so that I can take a shower….that is the goal.

Speaking of jobs, I have had a couple more interviews.  One, a phone interview I had yesterday, was a complete disaster.  As I listened to myself answering the questions the recruiter asked, all I could think of was, ‘oh my god, you sound like an idiot!’  It was 8 o’clock in the morning so perhaps that had something to do with it but, frankly, I just didn’t present myself well. I thought of all the right things to say once I got off the phone, which didn’t help me. What I try to think of after an interview like this is that it  was good practice.  I’ll know what to say the next time I get asked similar questions….hopefully.  The other interview last week went well and I have a second one at the same place today.  I’m not sure I’m ready to go back to work, but I guess it is better than thinking about my bathroom problems.

The weather is getting to be ridiculous and it is preventing me from doing all the things I wanted to do while unemployed.  I’m just hibernating and getting upset with myself about doing that.  I have decided that next week, no matter what the weather is, I’m going to 3 museums to get a little culture.  I’m also going to take one salsa lesson!  Wish me good luck.  As I write this, Hoda and Kathy Lee are having a summer beach party on the today show.  I love these women!  I think I’m going to put on my bathing suit and join them.  Have a good week.
